When Anxiety Hits

5 simple things you can do right now

Sometimes anxiety comes on suddenly.

Your heart races.
Your thoughts speed up.
Your body feels on edge.

In these moments, you don’t need a long explanation.
You need something simple to hold on to.

Here are five gentle ways to help your body calm down again:

1. Breathe out longer than you breathe in

Inhale for 4 seconds.
Exhale for 6–8 seconds.

The long exhale tells your nervous system:
You are safe.

2. Use cold to reset your body

Cold water on your wrists.
An ice cube in your hand.
A cold drink.

This can interrupt the wave of panic and bring you back into your body.

3. Come back to the present (5–4–3–2–1)

5 things you see
4 things you feel
3 things you hear
2 things you smell
1 thing you taste

Anxiety pulls you away.
This brings you back.

4. Talk to yourself differently

“This is anxiety.”
“This is not dangerous.”
“It will pass.”

You are not in danger.
Even if it feels that way.

5. Create a sense of safety in your body

Place your hand on your chest.
Feel your breath.
Apply gentle pressure.

Your body can calm your mind.

You don’t have to do all of this perfectly.

Even one small step can begin to shift something.

Anxiety may feel overwhelming in the moment—
but it will pass.

And you are not alone in it.
